Checklist: Planning Baby’s Full Month Celebration From A-Z

“Eh, ma, what do people usually do for a baby’s full month ah?” or “Call mother and ask her what she did for my own full month”. These lines sound familiar? Well, if you are racking your brain trying to figure out how to go about this full month celebration planning bit, we are here to help.

It’s been a month since your infant was born. You know that there is supposed to be a celebration of some description. A vague memory of it plays in your head where you recall seeing red eggs and some ‘kueh’ of some description that looks like a tortoise. Then there’s your parents hinting and asking about something called a full month celebration. Now it dawns upon you, you are the one who has to plan and execute it. The real challenge now is how do you do so without losing your nerves AND still take care of a baby at the same time…not to make any mention of this pandemic gumming up the works.

Come with us as we guide you through this confusing maze that is planning for your infant’s full month celebration. Of course, there may be family-specific traditions and customs that we are not taking into consideration here, focusing on the general steps that are usually taken when hosting such a celebration.

When Is it?

The answer to this question really is in the name of the celebration itself. Considering that it is a full moon or a full month party, it is usually organised when the infant is or is about to turn a month old. A side bit of added information here, it is also meant to be a celebration for you as a mother too. So, congratulations on becoming a mom and completing your confinement!

That all being said, it really is up to you whether you want to adhere to tradition or customs, as mentioned before, to set the date exactly upon the first full month of your child’s birth (30 days after birth), or if you want to set it a hundred days after his or her birth, this too, is a generally accepted day of celebration.

Who?

Having decided on the when, you will now have the headache of figuring out who you want to be there to join in on the festivities. We understand wanting to invite all your friends and family for them to see your little bundle of joy, but, especially now with the pandemic, that may not be the brightest idea.

We recommend that you stick with close family members and friends for the time being and those who have been fully vaccinated at that. Remember, infants do not have very strong immune systems. A rough rule of thumb, try not to have more than two people per the number of rooms in your house, and ensure proper ventilation in all rooms. And of course, when planning for your guests list, do get your updates on the latest safety and preventive measures and take them into consideration too.

Something that has become a bit of a trend, especially with the current global situation, is the celebration taking a virtual setting. You might consider having a Zoom or Skype celebration.

How Much?

It may be counterintuitive to not have a budget set beforehand, but we normally finalise how many people we want first in order to figure out how much will be needed for the catering for that number of guests and a location large enough to fit in everybody. Again, we must remind you that this is only a general guideline to give you a rough idea of how to go about planning your party and not a mandatory order that you have to follow these steps to the letter.

Thus, think back to the previous step and how many guests you want. Some parents who live in condos have rented their condominium’s function halls. If you want this to be a close-family-and-friends kind of fare, then your own homes will do quite nicely for a cozy atmosphere for your party.

Invites

Once the guest list has been finalised, look up how much it would be to send personalised invitations to all your guests. These days, you could just send them an “evite” or online invitation; even WhatsApp messages can work in a pinch.

Food

The main idea of sending out invitations would be to get them back and see who will be attending or not attending. That makes this next part more convenient so that you don’t have to prepare more food than is necessary…or even worse, if you do not prepare enough food!

Also, you may want to place an option in your invitations for guests to fill in as to their dietary preferences – vegetarian, gluten-free, seafood allergy, etc. It would most certainly cast a pall over the celebration if someone accidentally eats something they shouldn’t. So, let’s avoid that as far as possible.

A bit of a segue here, while it may be attractive to have a catering service and a buffet, during this pandemic, it might be beneficial to have individually packed food for everyone involved.

Activities

This next one is really, really optional. Some of you may prefer slow, quiet nights being in the company of your friends and family with some conversation and food. Some may prefer instead to have the cast of STOMP and Riverdance perform throughout the day’s events – that is truly up to personal preference. Do remember to factor in the cost of hiring the entertainment into your budget right under your costs for the food.

Ready to Party!

So, you’ve planned everything, you’ve placed the orders, you’ve sent the invites, you’ve hired the activities. We understand that nagging feeling at the back of your mind that you might have missed something. Don’t worry, if you’ve followed all the steps up to this part, you’re most probably doing fine and things will most likely go according to plan. Just sit back, wait for the day to come, and enjoy yourselves.
